Frequently Asked Questions
What is psychological therapy?
Psychological therapy (also known as psychotherapy or “talk therapy”) is a well-researched process that helps people explore and work through emotional, mental health and behavioural concerns such as anxiety, depression and stress.
It involves talking with a trained psychologist in a safe and confidential space, identifying unhelpful patterns, and learning strategies to improve wellbeing. The goal is to reduce distress, build resilience, and support more helpful ways of thinking, feeling and relating to others.
What types of therapy do you use?
I use a range of evidence-based therapies including:
-
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
-
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)
-

Mindfulness-based approaches

Each approach is tailored to suit your needs, and we’ll work together to find what best supports your goals.

Do I need a referral?
You don’t need a referral to begin therapy.
However, if you do have a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP or psychiatrist, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates — currently $141.85 per session with a Clinical Psychologist (up to 10 sessions per year).
Sessions can also be accessed privately funded.
Do I really need therapy?
You don’t have to wait until things feel unmanageable to seek support.
If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low in mood or simply not yourself, therapy can help you make sense of what’s going on and find new ways to cope. Many people also experience physical signs of stress — trouble sleeping, tension, fatigue, or digestive discomfort. Others notice changes in their mood, relationships or decision-making.
It’s common to “push through” and hope things improve, but reaching out for help can be a powerful first step toward real change. Therapy isn’t a sign of weakness — it’s a sign of self-awareness and strength.
